Djúpalónssandur is characterized by its smooth black stones, known as Djúpalónsperlur or the Pearls of Djúpalón, which blanket the beach and are emblematic of the region's volcanic past. The beach is also adorned with fascinating rock formations, such as Gatklettur rock with its distinctive hole, and the remains of a British trawler that wrecked here in 1948, providing a poignant reminder of the sea's power and the area's maritime history.
